What causes Knee Joint Pain?

Did you know that the knee is one of the most easily injured parts of the body? It is also the most used and complicated joint. The knee is used a lot, including when we sit, stand, walk, or run. Knee pain can be caused by any movement. There are many injuries that could cause knee pain. A ruptured ligament or torn articulation can often cause knee pain. However, there are other medical conditions that can cause knee pain, such as arthritis, gout, and infections. While some knee pain is minor, others can cause severe problems that can impact your quality of living.

Take Note

  • Ligament Injuries. A hard stop or twist of your knee, which is common when you engage in athletic activities, can cause torn ligaments. You will often hear a popping sound when you tear ligaments. This will be followed immediately by severe knee pain.
  • Dislocation of the Kneecap. This is another common injury that can cause severe knee pain. A doctor may need to snap the kneecap (patella), if it moves out of its place.
  • Tendon ruptures. Some tendons (quadriceps, patellar) may rupture completely or partially. Tendon ruptures can cause knee pain in joggers. A tendon rupture is usually treated with surgery. However, a partial rupture can be treated with a splint.
  • Meniscal Injuries. Meniscal injuries are when your knees click or grind while you move or lock in one position. This type of knee pain is usually caused by overuse or a trauma. Ice packs and heating pads can be used if the knee pain is due to a minor injury.

Remember

If the pain persists for more than a few days or becomes severe, you should consult your doctor immediately. Your doctor will be able to determine the root cause of your problem. Only then can the right treatment plan begin. Some knee injuries may require surgery. In the United States, more than 450,000 knee replacements are performed each year by surgeons.

Women account for two thirds of all knee replacement patients. The Center for Disease Control has released statistics that show 311,000 total knee replacements were performed by women in the past year. 167,000 men also had total knee replacements.

Other knee pain issues may require stretching exercises or physical therapy, while others may just require rest. These important decisions can only be made by your doctor.
